Born into humble beginnings, Claude Gelee - known as Claude le Lorrain, began his career as an apprentice to a pastry chef. His profession, at which he was not particularly accomplished, took him to Rome where he accepted work as a servant to the landscape artist Agostino Tassi. Tassi, out of sheer kindness, began to tutor the now orphaned Lorrain.Lorrain's natural patience and eagerness to excel lead him to incessantly examine Nature, particularly the minute variations of light and shade. His delicacy of approach coupled with an exact knowledge of aerial perspective and an emphasis on the true characteristic of Nature, won him many great patrons and he is credited with contributing greatly to the 'reform' of landscape painting in the 17th century.
