These illustrations are original plates from the book simply titled 'Balloons', published by the Ariel Press and written by C. H. Gibbs-Smith in the early 1900's. However the artwork itself dates from between 1783 and 1820. The book was aimed at celebrating the stunning aviation designs, which had not been circulated to the public for 150 years at the time of publication. The Royal Aeronautical Society wrote a review of the book and described it as 'a book of colour and delight', following up with the comment 'If there are dreams to sell, what would you buy?... And I believe many will reply 'Balloons' when they see this graceful publication'
