Artist and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian set sail from Germany to South America, and illustrated all of the wild and plant life she encountered there for the next two years. At the time, the life cycle of insects (such as these butterflies) was largely unknown, and her studies helped bring light to how the lifecycle of a butterfly progressed. Over 300 years later, her artwork is still legendary in the worlds of both etymology and art.
